  • Product Feature:  Brother MFC-6490cw Multi-Function Center all-in-one professional printer.

Topics Covered:

  • Viewer Comment: This is a great show!  This show has immensely helped me get through my Linux experience.
  • Thanks to John Hunt for helping us improve our RSS feed.
  • Category5.TV viewer forum now requires login.
  • New poll is online: How did you hear of Category5.TV?
  • Audio-only feed is online for dialup / low-bandwidth users, or those who want to listen to Category5 Technology TV live with an iPhone or other portable device that is Internet connected.
  • Robbie corrects a few of his previous mistakes:  Episode 54 (1 GB, meant 1 TB).  Episode 53 (FLV conversion software is Moyea FLV to Video converter).
  • Viewer Comment:  My first hard drive was 120 (or 2?) MB.
  • System Crash:  A first time for everything -- During this time, Robbie's computer, which hosts all cameras, the web stream, etc. simply rebooted itself.  No explanation, and no apparent reason.  The Windows event viewer didn't even show any errors.  Temperatures were normal, and everything seemed fine after the sudden reboot.  The only thing lost was 3 minutes of show time and an advertiser tag (which will be made good).  During the brief outage, live viewers were automatically booted to last week's feed, but once our system came back up, they were automatically reconnected to the live feed.
  • Viewer Question:  How do you disable MP3 preview sound in Ubuntu?  Every time my mouse hovers over an MP3, it plays a preview that scares the crap out of me.
  • Viewer Comment:  I've been watching the show via Miro, watching your feature on OpenOffice.org and wanted to mention that you can set the default file format that OpenOffice saves the files in to Word's .DOC format.
  • Changing the default save format in OpenOffice.org Writer (the Microsoft Word-compatible free word processor).
  • Viewer Question:  Is .ODT an XML format?
  • Viewer Comment:  Try the new KDE4.
  • Viewer Question:  Is there a Windows program to easily backup a Wordpress blog?
  • Viewer Question:  I'm a recent Ubuntu convert, and find everything pretty easy to understand.  I'm having trouble finding a non-commercial application to run World of Warcraft.  Is there anything freely available?
  • Viewer Question:  Can you install Skype in Ubuntu?
  • Viewer Question:  I can't get Miro working on Ubuntu Hardy.  Can you help?
  • Viewer Comment:  I find that Miro and Compiz argue sometimes.
  • Disabling Compiz temporarily using metacity --replace and compiz --replace
  • Viewer Question:  Is there a way to sync a Nokia n95 with Ubuntu?
  • Viewer Question:  I'm getting a GPG signature error when running apt-get.  How can I fix this?  (See the notes for the fix below).
  • It doesn't make sense for users to use Word format files to share document files.  You should use ODF.
  • Product Feature:  Brother MFC-6490CW Multi-Function Center Professional-Series all-in-one printer.
  • The Brother MFC-6490CW prints up to Ledger size (11x17").
  • Wireless networking is supported by the MFC-6490CW from Brother.

  • The economy behind printing your own photos.
  • Brother's MFC-6490CW printer supports high-yield cartridges.
  • Reviewing the print quality of the photo printing capabilities of the Brother MFC-6490CW printer.
  • Printing speeds and resolution of the Brother MFC-6490CW.
  • Fax features are integrated into the Brother MFC-6490CW printer.
  • Brother provides .DEB installation packages for Linux users of the MFC-6490CW.
  • Things to look at when buying a new printer.  How does the Brother MFC-6490CW measure up?
  • The featureset of the Brother MFC-6490CW.
  • The cost of the Brother MFC-6490CW and its cartridges.
  • Viewer Question:  My laptop has a built-in webcam.  Is there any program you know of for Linux that can record video and capture still photos?
  • Viewer Question:  I'd like to experiment with Ubuntu server.  Will the server still run okay even if I setup Ubuntu Desktop on the same PC and play games?
  • Viewer Comment:  Ubuntu has a server edition.
  • Viewer Question:  Can you install BIND and SAMBA server on Ubuntu Desktop?
  • Viewer Comment:  I want a command-line Linux server where I can type in the name of the program to launch it.
  • Viewer Comment:  The Perfect Hardy is awesome!  Thanks for writing it.
  • Viewer Question:  When I open RealPlayer 11 and launch a video file, it tells me I need video/x-ms-wmv.  What can I do to fix this?
  • Viewer Suggestion:  GKrellM - a nice CPU and hardware monitor available in Synaptic Package Manager.
  • Viewer Question:  I just built my first ITX computer.  Nothing will recognize my hard drive except for the BIOS.  How can I install an operating system onto my system?
