Casper vanished (oh, the irony) before answering my question about their sound issue.   Casper; if you're reading this, my guess would have been your audio drivers.  Please bring up "Device Manager" by right-clicking on your "My Computer" icon, and choosing Properties->System.

We were asked about logging in to Ubuntu as root.  This is extremely (!!) dangerous.  We never actually answered the question.  Yes, it can be done.  If you really need to know, let me know.
