  • Getting rid of the annoying "USB device could perform faster" message in Windows XP.
  • Merging multiple video files into one using free tools in Linux.
  • Setting any Linux application to load in your system tray.
  • Feature:  Using Microsoft PowerToys to add virtual desktops to Windows XP.

Topics Covered:

  • Disabling the annoying "USB device could perform faster" message in Windows XP.
  • Brief thoughts about Viruses in Windows.  Why do your friends receive viruses "from you", even though you are not infected.  How do they spread?  How do you prevent getting infected?
  • Viewer Question:  When is IE8 coming out?  (There is no real answer to this yet; but hints have been dropped that it may be Q4 2008).
  • Viewer Question:  OpenOffice has recently changed all menu fonts and Arial to a weird font.  How do I fix this?  (Potentially unresolved; no update from viewer).
  • Using AllTray to load any Linux application into a system tray icon.  Works really nice for programs like Miro.
  • Viewer Question:  When I load Ubuntu on my TV, my top and bottom taskbars are missing (screen is cropped).  How do I fix this?
  • Viewer Question:  Even after reinstalling, Flash 9 doesn't work on Windows XP.  How can I fix this?  (No final answer, as it seemingly fixed itself).
  • Viewer Question:  I'm completely new to Linux, and am interested in the "3D cube" and other effects.  I'd also like to run Windows Vista in a virtual machine.  Where is a good place to start?
  • Viewer Question:  When I try to defragment my USB external harddrive, Windows tells me I need to run chkdsk.  What can I do to proceed?
  • Viewer Question:  I'm having trouble with updates in Ubuntu Hardy Heron RC.  Is there a way to disable the particular updates which are causing the problem?
  • Viewer Question:  Have you seen the Eee PC?
  • Feature:  Using Microsoft PowerToys to add virtual desktops to Windows XP using the "Virtual Desktop Manager" PowerToy.
  • Using the avimerge and mpgjoin tools in Linux to merge multiple video files into one.

Notes:

Technical note:  We got rid of the old capture device and installed a PCI capture card.  Video captures from the computer should now be higher quality.
