From The Category5.TV Newsroom:

  • The saga continues. Following the revelation of Google's Street View car collecting potentially private data via open WiFi networks, Connecticut Attourney General Richard Blumenthal announced yesterday that his office is leading a multi-state investigation. More than thirty U.S. states have already indicated interest in participating in Blumenthal's investigation, which aims to determine why Google saved private user data which it claims was collected accidentally. A frightening number of lawsuits have been issued against Google following the discovery of the private data collection, so many so that Google has actually requested that all lawsuits be consolidated into one case to be heard in a court in California. Is your WiFi secure? Make sure you've enabled encryption. If you're not sure how, talk to your computer person or call your router manufacturer. The French National Commission on Computing and Liberty have confirmed that Google recorded email passwords as well as actual email messages. While this has come to light, it's important to realize that anyone with a little know-how can do the same if you're not using proper data encryption on your wireless device.
  • Here's something interesting: actor Kevin Costner, known for his work in Dances with Wolves and Waterworld, has what he believes may be a solution—or at least something that will give us a fighting chance—for the oil spill in the Gulf. Separating oil from water is what the device is all about, and Costner's "dream" machine is the real deal, able to process 210,000 gallons of oil-slicked water per day, per machine... and BP has acquired 32 of the machines. Unknown to many, Costner owns a company called "Ocean Therapy Solutions", and has been trying to get his technology marketed for the past 17 years, spending more than $20 million of his own money to create and market the device. It is estimated that Costner's machines will be able to process up to 60,000 barrels of oil leaking into the Gulf per day, and he proudly calls his device a "21st-century solution to the risks of drilling in waters as deep as 1.6 kilometers".
  • iPhone OS 4, known as iOS4, was released by Apple last night, bringing rudimentary multitasking to the iPhone device. Not true multitasking mind you, however some apps will now be able to perform some specific tasks in the background. Many are calling the multitasking horrible, and PC World is calling it "sloppy", saying Apple "blew it" with their latest release. The update introduces enhanced email, and patches 64 documented vulnerabilities on the iPhone, some would say a little late, with a number of those issues being known for over a year. iOS4 is incompatible with the original iPhone and the iPod touch, and owners of the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch devices will receive the update, but a feature-reduced version. Only the iPhone 3GS and current generation iPod touch will gain all the new features of the update. Interestingly, with iOS4 being the biggest hype for Apple fan-boys at the moment, Android device users are looking at the update and wondering why Apple users are so excited about features which the Linux-based Android smartphones have supported for a long time. Multitasking? Yeah; Android does that, only it does it better. Preston Gralla, a blogger on computerworld.com says "when it comes to innovation, Apple seems to be playing catch-up". Still, iPhone users are excited that they can now create folders. And if you have the latest hardware, you can even change your wallpaper. iOS4 in a nutshell: dissappointing. Apple's all about hype these days. If you're contemplating either an iPhone or an Android phone, go with Linux—it's definitely Android for the win. All Apple has done is proved that they think their users are naive, and will invest in anything they release.
