Links: Notes: From The Category5.TV Newsroom: - Web designers everywhere have come to live with a simple limitation of the Internet. Namely, Web-Safe Fonts. Beyond creating images to contain text, it is generally accepted that web designers can only use a handful of font faces which are considered "universal", or standard. With Mozilla working with TypeSupply, LettError, and others, a new standard known as WOFF, or Web Open Font Format has been established, and Microsoft has announced that they've joined Mozilla and Opera in sponsoring the submission of the new format to the W3C in hopes of it being accepted as a standard. This could mean a lot more freedom for web developers to use "fancier" fonts in their web site text bodies, could speed up page load times and reduce bandwidth usage by reducing the number of images required on a page, and will also make a lot of web designers smile. It is not known as of yet whether Microsoft will accept the new standard in their Internet Explorer browser should it pass the W3C, but with their recent efforts to become more standards-compliant, we can guess support will be implemented in Internet Explorer 9.
- Following an update to the software last week, many corporate and public sectors of McAfee antivirus products found their systems repeatedly rebooting as McAfee falsely identified core Windows files as viruses. Nancy Jean, a spokeswoman for the Lifespan system of hospitals said, the problem forced about a third of the hospitals in Rhode Island to postpone elective surgeries and stop treating patients without traumas in emergency rooms. In Kentucky, state police were forced to shut down the computers in their patrol cars as technicians tried to fix the problem. The issue does not affect consumer-level products from McAfee, but is indeed an eye-opener for users around the world who subscribe to their products. While we would not recommend McAfee antivirus products anyway, for users who are looking for a quality product, we suggest looking at solid products such as ESET NOD32 Antivirus from smartantivirus.ca, or make the switch to Linux or Mac and be done with it.
- Canonical has published the release candidate for their new long-term support version of Ubuntu: the Lucid Lynx, AKA Ubuntu 10.04. With a new look, better integration for cloud computing and some outstanding user-friendly enhancements, the new version, which is due for final release on Thursday, looks outstanding. The removal of the Hal package allows Ubuntu to boot and resume from suspended mode faster, with a super-zippy bootup from power-on to desktop. There is also support for Active Directory authentication, which helps users integrate their Ubuntu PCs into corporate networks utilizing Microsoft Windows-based servers. Nvidia users will find Nouveau as their default video driver, with out of the box support for more resolutions than previous releases, but proprietary Nvidia drivers are also available. Canonical considers the Release Candidate to be a complete and stable representation of 10.04, and invites users who want a sneak peak to visit Ubuntu.com today for the free download.
