It should also be noted that Drawbot does not start by shuffling the cards. The first thing it does is remove the Christy card from the deck. [wink] From The Category5.TV Newsroom:- Garrett Serack, the open source developer at Microsoft, has announced plans to bring a native running open source platform to Windows. Yes, an APT or RPM-like tool for Windows. In a blog post on Friday, Serack announced the Common Opensource Application Publishing Platform, or CoApp. The new solution aims to provide a community-driven package management system to Windows. Time will tell how the service is adopted by developers, as many believe this to be simply another attempt to infiltrate Open Source with Microsoft's deceitful and monopolous practices in an effort to benefit from Open Source development while others acknowledge that this is simply Microsoft admitting that Linux does it better, and they want to copycat yet again.
- On Friday, Apple provided a sneak peek at their version 4.0 of the iPhone operating system, with a focus on adding multitasking to the platform. In addition to this well-needed enhancement, iPhone OS 4.0 will support multiple Exchange mailboxes, email encryption, secure VPN support, and more. What users really want to know is whether the new version of the iPhone OS will meet the multitasking performance of competing products powered by Android or Linux. For the answer, they'll have to be patient; version 4.0 will be released this summer.
- Following their acquisition of Danger Inc, Microsoft announced yesterday its launch of the new Microsoft Pink line of social media ready devices, starting with two devices, named Kin One and Kin Two. The devices include a modified version of Windows Phone 7, with a heavy slant towards social media accessibility. Surprisingly, the Kin devices do not support third-party apps, nor is there support for either Flash or Silverlight. With the better of the two models, Kin Two, providing an HVGA display, a QWERTY keyboard, 8 megapixel camera and 8GB of internal storage, both phones carry wifi and Bluetooth support in addition to the standard 3G cellular access. Watch for the Kin One and Two in the USA beginning in May, and launching in Europe this fall.
- In an effort by the government to protect the UK's creative industries, the controvercial Digital Economy Bill has been passed into law. This legistlation is aimed at controlling the illegal sharing of digital media in Britain, but covers everything from local television to video game ratings and how Internet domains are registered in the UK. For the first year, users who are suspected of participating in illegal downloading or file sharing will be met with a letter asking them to stop their activities, and providing a list of legal alternatives. After that initial period, a full review will be conducted, and if illegal downloads have not dropped by 70%, the result could be a limit on UK Internet speeds, bandwidth restrictions, or even temporary suspension of Internet services. One fear with respect to this bill is that publicly accessible wifi hotspots will have no choice but to begin regulating their users, or risk being reprimanded for their users' actions. Being that most hotspots are not necessary geeks, this could mean a reduction in available wifi access as hotspots shut down or lock down their network access to protect themselves. Another valid concern is that users whose Internet has been hijacked, or is being used unknowingly by neighbors, may be subject to repercussions based on those users' actions. Contact your local Member of Parliament to find out what you can do to protect your rights as an Internet user.
- While Robbie was at work yesterday, he was called home early when it was discovered that someone had smashed the patio door leading to the Category5 TV studio and made off with some equipment. The thief was easily able to wrap up Hillary's laptop, along with one of our two DV cameras and a few lesser items. Forensic experts from the Barrie Police Department were unable to establish solid evidence as to who the criminal was, and it is not expected that the hardware will be recovered. Fortunately, no one was home at the time, and the cat hid himself under a bed. A fund has been set up to allow able viewers to show their support in helping replenish that which was lost, and we thank you sincerely for your support. To find out more, please visit our web site at www.Category5.TV. For those who are unable to show support through this financially, we want you to know that we appreciate your loyal viewership, and for standing by us in your thoughts and prayers. In Robbie's words as read from the Category5.TV, "The show must go on".
