Links: Notes: Oooh, look at me looking at the wrong camera off the top! I accidentally did not enable the compressor tonight... so you get to see how much of a difference it makes to our levels, and even hear the old "explosion" when the co-host laughs. Whoops. With regards to startup-manager, it is very possible that if the viewer is using Grub2, that could be the difference, as startup-manager has more features in older versions of Grub. From The Category5.TV Newsroom: - This month's Windows security patches are a needed fix for Windows users. Whether you're using Windows XP, Vista, or 7, you are succeptible to some malicious exploits that allow attackers to hijack your system, giving them access to running applications on your computer. What's even more frightening is that servers are not in the clear either; it is reported that even the Windows Server 2003 and 2008 systems are affected, meaning a company's server running transparently in the server room could be hijacked by a malicious user. Protect yourself by downloading and installing your Windows updates, and make sure you always have an up-to-date antivirus program.
- Senator Dick Durbin is polling a number of big players such as Twitter, Apple, Oracle, AT&T, Cisco, Facebook, Skype, eBay and Amazon. The question? What are your human rights practices in China? In a stand against China's continual infringement on their citizen's human rights and freedom of speech, Durbin praises Google's decision, while not yet implemented, to stop censoring search results in China, and wants to know what other big companies are doing to follow suit.
- In 2006, Microsoft purchased SUSE Linux Enterprise Server subscription certificates from Novell in order to satisfy a patent indemnification pact. Under the agreement, Novell received an up-front payment of $348 Million from Microsoft, and according to sdtimes.com, they have nearly sold all of the licenses—which makes Microsoft the third largest seller of Linux in the world.
- It has long been speculated that sometime in 2012, the entire world will end. And it may not be conincidence that it'll be around that time when we run out of IPv4 addresses on the Internet. Every Internet-connected computer in the world has its own IP address, which is a unique identifier, or address, on the world wide web. With little more than 4 billion IPv4 addresses available, we're quickly running short on available addresses. Enter IPv6, the next widely-deployed version of the Internet Protocol, which will provide around 340 Undecillion IP addresses. No, we didn't make that up, and you didn't hear me wrong; undecillion. Even if every star in the known universe were to have its very own IPv6 address, there would still be enough left over for you and I. Google is prepared. While their search engine has been ready for IPv6 for a couple years, as of Friday, their YouTube service has also been upgraded to support IPv6.
- Recognizing Mac OS 10.4 as an aged platform, having been released in early 2005, Mozilla has announced it will stop support for its products on Mac OS Tiger, calling its continued support a hinderance as it consumes valuable time and effort on behalf of programmers. While this seems like a fine move on behalf of Mozilla, it's interesting to note that support for Microsoft Windows XP, which was released in 2001, will continue. However, it goes to show users of older Mac computers are not likely to see the same longevity of Mac systems that came before them, which often were in use for more than a decade before being considered obsolete.
- As Jane Silber moves into the CEO position at Canonical, the new COO has been announced as Matt Asay, one of Open Source's loudest voices on the web, and the founder of the Open Source Business Conference. Having such a strong Open Source advocate on board at Canonical should add a boost to Ubuntu Linux as they enter into their next Long-Term Support release, and drive Linux further than ever on the desktop.
