Links: Notes: I felt bad about being "unhelpful" with a couple of the questions tonight. I'd like to look into the CBC web site problem, and would have looked closer at the problem if I could do the show over ;) Sorry about that. I misunderstood the intention behind the question. I'll make good for it. Don't worry, I'll mention the necklace thing to Hillary ;) From The Category5.TV Newsroom: - Users of the Windows 7 Release Candidate are in for a treat over the next couple of months, as the end of the line comes to the trial version of Microsoft's latest operating system. Beginning on February 15th, the expiry notices will begin, and from March 1st through June 1, your PC will begin shutting down at two-hour intervals without saving your work. This only affects those who downloaded the trial version of Windows 7 before its release. To prevent any loss of productivity, backup all your personal files and proceed to either install a full version of Windows 7, or consider trying an alternative operating system such as Ubuntu Linux.
- Time to throw out your old Internet Explorer. Google has announced that it has begun to phase out support for Internet Explorer 6. Web designers everywhere have been saying it for years: "Update your browser" or "Switch to Firefox", but having a giant such as Google finally put their foot down should be a wakeup call for those who still use the 9-year-old browser that has forced expensive "Browser Compatibility" service fees, and is said to have resulted in the web being "held back" from many potential technologies. With 20% of web users reportedly still using this antiquated browser, web development companies have continued the sometimes futile effort of making it work with their web services. And so, we reiterate the voice of your local web developer: Upgrade IE, or better yet, switch to Firefox.
- Intel's most power-efficient processors will start appearing in mobile computers this month. While you've already seen the standard-power models on the store shelves, the new Ultra-Low-Voltage Core i3, i5 and i7 processors are slated to replace most of Intel's older generation of Core 2 processors across its mobile line. The new ultra-low-voltage chips will mean extended battery life for the mobile user.
- It would seem that talking about the iPad would be almost as bad as rick-rolling our audience, so we're just not going to do it.
- Canonical, the makers of the Ubuntu Linux operating system, has announced that the default search provider in Ubuntu 10.04 will be changed from Google to Yahoo. This comes as Canonical has negotiated a revenue sharing deal with Yahoo, which will help Canonical continue producing Ubuntu. While the change appears drastic, the ability to change back to Google is only two clicks away for a user. That said, Vish raises a valid point in the Ubuntu mailing list that should Ubuntu make this change, Yahoo should also commit to remove the warning that Ubuntu is an "unsupported OS" when users connect to Yahoo Mail. Some fear that this change will affect Canonical's relationship with Mozilla, however Canonical employee Rick Spencer says Mozilla was "not surprised by this change". Changing default search engines based on improved features or security reasons is practical; but what about changing solely based on a revenue stream. What are your thoughts? Email us at

- With Oracle moving in as owner of Sun Microsystems, many feared it could mean big changes for MySQL and OpenOffice. The news is in that Oracle intends not only to keep these products going, but to make them "better". Oracle's chief corporate architect, Edward Screven announced on Wednesday that Sun's MySQL independent sales force and development teams will be retained under Oracle's ownership. It has not been made clear yet whether the upcoming programming changes provided under Oracle will be released to the open source community, and the next 12 to 14 months will see an entire community of users watching very closely, scrutinizing their every move.
