Notes:

Important Mention:  A big thanks to Smartsphere for pointing me on to OpenOffice as a solution for the Mac OS PDF issue.

The file you'd edit to fix the Adobe Flash "clicking" problem is: /usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/i386/linux/npviewers - you can edit it using gksudo gedit /usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/i386/linux/npviewers (if it exists).

Did Hillary seriously just say Han Solo is from Star Trek?  [GASP!]

Sorry the init.d stuff started to run on.  Sometimes it's a challenge to know how complex to get during the live show.  I try hard to help everyone, but it started to feel like it might have been too much for novice users.  I'll try (in future) to warn novices to hang tight for 5 minutes while I walk through goofy Linux stuff  ;)

From The Category5.TV Newsroom:

  • Lenovo has announced their latest innovation in hard drive technology, and it's called the RapidDrive. Reminiscent of Samsung's "Hybrid Drive" from a few years back, the RapidDrive seemlessly integrates SSD technology with traditional platter-based storage. With a performance boost of up to 66%, the speed difference is noticable—and you can bet power consumption will be greatly reduced as the platter-based portion of the drive is spun down while the drive intelligently allocates usage of the SSD portion. Not only will this provide exceptional speed improvements over traditional drives, but we can also expect longer battery life from laptops sporting this dreamy drive. The RapidDrive will be offered first as an option for the new IdeaPad Y460 and Y560 models.
  • According to BusinessWeek.com, rivals Apple and Microsoft are working together to change the default search engine on iPhone devices from Google to Microsoft's Bing search engine. With Google's release of the Nexus One smartphone—an obvious competitor to the iPhone—Apple seems bitter, and appears to be using Microsoft to get its revenge. Inside sources have shared that the deal with Bing may only be a way to buy time, as Apple may venture to release its own competing search engine offering.
  • It would appear 2010 is becoming the year of the retired CEO. Word has it Jon Schwartz is planning to surrender his post as CEO of Sun Microsystems. This news follows Oracle's having received the "okay" on Thursday by the European Commission to acquire Sun for $7.4 Billion US. Schwartz is preparing to leave Sun in the hands of Oracle, with a reported severance package of $12 million, plus he plans to cash in his $5.1 million in Sun shares. Oracle awaits approval from China and Russia, and expects to close the deal promptly.
  • There's nothing like a blast from the past to take us into the future. IBM and Fujifilm have worked together the past three years to bring us the future—in magnetic tape storage. Like the 8-track audio cassettes of the 1970's, or the later released video tapes—a primitive form of the DVD—these pocket-sized magnetic ribbon devices have been around since the late 1980s. What makes this blast-from-the-past so spectacular? IBM has successfully tested a prototype at 29.5 billion bits per square inch; meaning a single cassette could hold up to 35 Terribytes of uncompressed data. Certainly not something for the average home user, this latest enhancement will see digital storage tape as a viable solution for data archiving and larger bacups for at least the next ten years.
