Category5 Green Initiatives
-
Category5 TV hosts its web site(s) in carbon-neutral hosting facilities. This means the carbon footprint of our web host is offset by doing things like planting trees. - The Category5 studio is networked with D-Link Green Gigabit switches, which reduce power consumption by automatically detecting the length of attached Ethernet cables and the on/off status of the connected devices. When compared to conventional network switches, the ones we utilize at Category5 TV use up to 73% less energy.
- The Category5 studio uses CyberPower GreenPower UPS's, which reduce the power consumption by up to 75% compared to conventional UPS systems.
- Category5 devices requiring batteries are powered by either NiMH rechargeables where optional, and where Alkalines are required, we use Eco Alkalines, which are the world's first carbon-neutral alkaline battery. In all instances where batteries are involved, e-waste recycling facilities are utilized for their disposal.
- The main broadcast system used to power the Category5 TV feed was built to be energy efficient, with components like a 98% efficient motherboard and 92% efficient power supply.
The studio lighting in the Category5 TV studio uses very little power. We utilize energy efficient tri-color fluorescent bulbs which are balanced to 5500k. This means we are able to generate the same light of standard studio lamps but without the heat or power consumption normally attributed to lighting a studio. We also do our best to only have them powered on when necessary. Typically this means they turn on around 5pm on a Tuesday night (as we must white-balance the cameras prior to each show) and we turn them off within a few minutes of sign-off (around 8:15pm).- We use computer monitors instead of printers, when possible. You'll notice we sometimes use a notepad, but the majority of our work on-air happens on the computer screen. This saves paper, ink and other resources that would be unnecessarily wasted if we were to print everything on paper.
- We turn off all computer systems and devices when not in use. In a "good week", our servers are powered on from about 3pm to 10pm on a Tuesday night and off the rest of the time.
- Category5 utilizes appropriate e-waste facilities for electronic waste recycling.
Our green initiatives continue to expand as new ways to conserve energy and reduce our footprint become viable. Please check back again soon to see what we're doing differently.
