Topics Covered:

  • Robbie Ferguson and Erika Lalonde present from the Category5 studios in Barrie, Ontario.
  • Catching up with Erika Lalonde — complete with photos.
  • {play 7:21}Viewer Questions.
  • Viewer Question: I can't seem to get Flash working on Linux. Could it be the low-end video card on the laptop?
  • Fixing Flash playback on Linux by disabling hardware accelleration in the settings.
  • Viewer Comment: On Episode 250 when Eric was trying to think of the word of what was meant to be changed when cloning a virtual machine, I think he was looking for "hostname".
  • Viewer Question: Would it be possible to do a series of shows going into the principles of networking? For example, what IP addresses are, gateways, etc.?
  • Viewer Question: One of the more discouraging things about Linux is how to install software that is not in the repositories. In Windows we can just run the setup.exe file, but installing on Linux can be a much more onerous task. For example, how do I install the WhatPulse agent on my Linux computer?
  • Understanding what repositories give to Linux users.
  • Configuring WhatPulse on Linux so you can join the Category5 WhatPulse Team.
  • Making scripts executable in Linux using chmod.
  • Running scripts as root ("administrator") user by using sudo on Linux.
  • {play 29:40}Top Stories from the Category5.TV Newsroom.
  • {play 34:16}Feature: Chirp allows users to transmit data audibly using digital "bird songs".
  • Robbie and Erika take a look at Chirp and test it to see if it actually works (and how well).
  • Viewer Question: What are your thoughts about some of the online services that break through geographic barriers for services such as Netflix, Hulu and BBC?
  • {play 45:46}Backing up your personal files (photos, videos, etc.) using a redundant storage paradigm is imperative.
  • The ClickFree backup device Robbie mentions and more thoughts about backups: From Episode 233.
  • Your hard drive is going to crash. It's only a question of when. Do you have two copies of everything that matters to you, stored on separate devices, stored at different locations?
  • Viewer Comment: You could use the cloud to store your backups.
  • The Category5.TV Broadcast Server has been upgraded to a single fast SSD (see Robbie's Blog) instead of the 5 enterprise drives that were previously adding 3.5 KG to the weight of the server and a whole lot 5x the chance of failure.
  • Announcing this year's cottage special, coming next week.
